Description

The type of the woman or goddess sitting on a throne is particularly common. The heavy and strong body shape and the broad face of this statuette are stylistically reminiscent of Ionic sculpture. Therefore, the centre of production is to be sought in the Eastern Greek area, perhaps on Samos.
Together with the terracotta of a reclining symposiast and a grooved alabastron (both in the August Kestner Museum), the statuette comes from a burial context that is unfortunately not known in detail. (AVS)

Detailed description
