Description

After the death of C. Iulius Caesar in 44 BC, his grand-nephew Octavian (later Emperor Augustus), the general Lepidus and Caesar's close comrade-in-arms, Marcus Antonius, entered into an alliance to restore the Republic. This triumvirate was confirmed by the marriage of Marcus Antonius to Octavian's sister, named Octavia. Coins were minted to mark the occasion, depicting the couple. However, the marriage did not last very long, for Marcus Antonius soon turned to the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. (SV)
