The representation of Apollo Kitharoidos is to be regarded as a glyptic repetition of the statue of Apollo Patroos from his temple on the west side of the Athenian Agora. It is the work of the sculptor Euphranor. The statuary type differs from the gemma representation in that it has a long, high-belted peplos overhang that reaches to the thighs. The sculptural works are all worked in the opposite direction to the gem image, which suggests the sigil character of the scarabaeoid. The head is preserved in the statuary series only in the late copy in the Vatican, probably not in the original version. (AVS)
