Description

Cast of a reliefs from the Ara Casali. Depicted is the capture of Troy by Heracles, an episode from the context of the first destruction of Troy (Hom. Il. 5,642; 14,250).
Heracles, supported by Athena who stands behind him, charges at a Trojan warrior, perhaps Laomedon, with a large round shield. Heracles himself is charactised by his club and also carries a round shield. On the ground, a fallen Trojan lies backwards over his shield. (AVS)

Detailed description

In der rechten unteren Ecke liegt der nackte Leichnam des Patroklos auf dem Rücken über Waffen gebeugt (Schilde). Arme und Kopf hängen schlaff herab. Hinter ihm steht der nackte und bärtige Hektor in einem weiten Ausfallschritt. Er trägt einen großen Ovalschild und einen korinthischen Helm. Die erhobene rechte Hand führt das Schwert. Auf ihn dringt von links Aias ein, der ebenfalls mit Helm, Schwert und Ovalschild bewaffnet ist. Mit dem Schwert holt er von unten zum Schlag aus. Im Hintergrund befindet sich eine Keule. Hinter Aias steht Athena, die ihn am rechten Arm hält. Athena ist mit langem Chiton gekleidet und trägt einen korinthischen Helm.
