As in the first print of the series, Goya revisits a lighthearted subject first developed in his early tapestry designs. However, instead of carefree dancers in an idyllic riverside landscape, he now shows a group of men and women – no longer young, but strikingly dressed – dancing in an indeterminate empty space. The elderly men clearly want to impress the younger women but overshoot the mark. Far from joyous, their buffoonery is so excessive, they risk toppling over.
