Description

Aryballos with an elephant's head as a handle, on whose head an eyelet is attached. The spherical body is decorated with inlays of various metals that once expressed a special colourfulness. Garland-holding erotes and birds can be seen in the lunettes.
The decoration of this ointment vessel is entirely in keeping with the opulence and prosperity propagated during Augustus' Principate. (AVS)
