The warrior standing on a single-axle chariot, dressed in a crossed belt and girdle, is a typical example of late geometric sculpture from the period around 700 BC. In his raised right hand he held a lance, with his left the reins.
The chariot originated in the Near East and found its way to the Hellenic mainland via Crete until the late Helladic period. However, it did not serve the Greek warriors as a fighting tool, but as a means of transport to the battlefield. Thus it was an expression of aristocratic prestige. (AVS)
