The Daunian people lived in Apulia from the 11th century BC. The most important group of finds from the early Daunian period of the 7th and 6th centuries BC include the anthropomorphic, i.e. human-shaped, stelae made of limestone from the Gargano.
These stelae bear the outlines of arms, clothing components (belts) and scenes of martial or hunting themes in bas-relief. On the top was a head in conical form, which has, however, been lost on this one.
The funerary stelae, which depict people in a very abstract way, offer a lot of space for decoration. Often there are also representations of hunters and warriors carrying spears and shields. (AVS)
