Description

Heads of the three triumvirs in profile, two side by side, one opposite: Octavianus, Marcus Antonius, Lepidus.
After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Octavianus, Marcus Antonius and Lepidus allied to form the Second Triumvirate, which was extended in 38 BC after Marcus Antonius had defeated Caesar's assassins at the battle of Philippi. Soon afterwards Lepidus was deprived of his power and resigned from the Triumvirate in 36 BC.
This piece is a post-antique replica of an 18th century gem in jasper. (AVS)
