The Jewish physician Dr. Albert David (1866-1940) lived in Großburgwedel and collected historical gold coins. Due to his persecution during the Nazi regime, Albert David committed suicide in 1940. His coin collection was confiscated under Nazi currency legislation and Jewish property legislation and a large part of it (31 pieces) was given to the Kestner Museum, where it is preserved to this day.
The City of Hanover is striving to locate David's rightful heirs in order to find a "just and fair solution" with them, in accordance with the Washington Declaration of 1998 (Principles of the Washington Conference Regarding Works of Art Confiscated by the Nazis, "Washington Principles").
